Riverside Gym & Leisure Club

Fantastic experience: Wow what a gym. In fact to call it just a gym would be an understatement. Riverside is an experience from the lovely staff to the gym facilities. Big shoutout to Luca, Harvey, Ellie, and Sam for being very welcoming.

Positive experience: A lot better since 2024: some nice updates including a 'functional' training room (but resistence bands and heavier dumbells and kettlebells would be good.) Now lots of choice of what room to train in and a lot of equipment to choose from. Changing rooms let things down still - bit crowded and could do with individual shower cubicles rather than a shared shower room. Steam room could be hotter and monitored better. Unfortunately no longer £21 a month (part time, going back a few decades) but now £35 and rising all the time, but with rising power and other costs, still good value.

Fantastic experience: Excellent gym with great facilities. Ticks all the boxes for everything I need. Been a member of lots of gyms over the last 15 years, this has been the best for me. The staff here (of all roles) are very friendly and approachable. The equipment is in good nick. Padel is really taking off here and creating a great community. Well priced and worth the money for me. Thanks Louise and team.

Positive experience: Banger gym – equipment is top notch, and the pool and sauna are lush and rarely packed. 50% off for students, so an absolute bargain. What more could you ask for, you say? Well… the showers. Think less “refreshing rinse” and more accidental eye contact and existential dread — No curtains, no privacy—just you, your soap, and a row of equally awkward strangers. Worth it nevertheless if you're after the gains and the lanes.

Fantastic experience: Amazing gym facilities, the paddle courts are great. There’s a social paddle WhatsApp group with set days to accommodate all Levels. Staff are friendly and helpful which gives the riverside a very family oriented atmosphere. The Roastery cafe upstairs has lots of choice and very reasonably priced.

Fantastic experience: Excellent Gym for the Price you pay and Parking good in the mornings when I go. Staff are always polite and helpful.

Negative experience: I went for a quick shower which I normally do when working away from home but this leisure centre turned me down saying , no you have to be a member or accompanying a member and pay to get shower which is a shame

Positive experience: The bad points; No parking when the Rugby is on - even though it's for members using the facilities only. Kings school kids make off peak feel like peak time. Feels quite cold, seen condensation on the windows many times. Small sauna. Young children with parents changing, running around etc No personal trainers People constantly letting the weights clatter down on the cable machines The good points; Very friendly members (mostly) Good membership price A good range of equipment Car parking (when no rugby is on) Nice staff Good location Things get fixed quite quickly

Negative experience: Sauna and steam room were cold. Gym outdated and changing rooms were full of kids all the time. Not able to change in peace.

Positive experience: staff: spot-on friendly always come through location: perfect 5 minute walk the dual carriageway is a bit deadly though facilities and equipment: good could do with more bench presses and sometimes steam room takes a little bit longer to get steamy

Fantastic experience: I want to give some recognition to how Louise(?) dealt with a medical emergency at the gym this week. She was incredibly professional and there was an ambulance there within 5 mins. The injured person looked in a bad way, so hopefully they are OK..? I was so impressed with how quick folks were to deal with the incident and the caring nature in which they helped the person.

Positive experience: Staff always polite and friendly, love being able to book a swimming slot. Only negative for me would be pool often contaminated with floating used plasters (gross when swimming) and a bit grubby (green algae) around the edges.

Fantastic experience: I've been a member for 6 plus years and have come regularly during that time. Over all its great value for money membership. It's not a gym with the latest mod-cons, but it has everything I'm looking for. Great facilities with the pool, sauna and steam room. Squash courts, good range of equipment in the gyms, a nice selection of classes I like. Friendly and helpful staff, ticks all the boxes for me, this is why I've been coming for so long! Generally a great place

Fantastic experience: When first came was unsure but have to say is nice, The place is kept nice and clean good facilities and always busy, Staff are really friendly and helpful, Do definitely enjoy going here now.. We had to cancel our membership due to too much going on in summer. but now want to return to swimming we don't use the other facilities so thought enquire about just paying for swimming but apparently they don't do just swimming membership which is a shame as enjoyed going here and having the friendly staff helped with my anxiety

Good range of gym equipment and the pool although often busy, is decent as there are 4 lanes and you can book slots via the leisure centre app. Only area of improvement is a lack of usable lockers and no machine which you can dry swimming trunks in

Fantastic experience: I use the mat area upstairs to warm up and then swim. Having swum at other local pools I like that this pool is warmer than the other pools. Having a booking system for swimming is a good way to guarantee swimming space, and I am normally always able to book a lane. I'm all around very happy.

Fantastic experience: I joined Riverside for a short time while I was working away in Gloucester and I absolutely loved it, so much so that I'm actually a little sad about having to find another gym to use now I'm back in Somerset! All the staff are so friendly and helpful but most importantly, welcoming. Very clean and well layed out. Would definitely recommend to friends and family in the area and would return myself if I was able too.

Fantastic experience: I've been going to Riverside for a few years now and I have to say it's a great place to exercise. Most of the staff are lovely, from Sally the cleaner to Ib the manager. Loving the refurbishment during lockdown. Ladies changing room now looks very clean and fresh and the pool decor is greatly improved. Love the new on line booking system, especially for swimming. Very well organised and easy to use. It's a shame it won't be in place forever!!! It means you can have a proper swim and prevents pool rage . Good value for money.

Fantastic experience: Friendly staff, good equipment. The members seem nice too. Doesn't seem to be overly busy at peak times, I have waited around to use any equipment.. classes are good too, a good variety.

Positive experience: Great gym. Really friendly staff and equally friendly members. Great selection of classes. A little dated in areas and needs a bit of TLC - changing rooms (men's is really out of date with no privacy according to my partner), some machines are dated. But overall a real good gym.

Fantastic experience: amazing staff all really friendly with my children to :) the cresh is so handy for training when no one else wants to have you little ones lol,, the gym equipment is at a fair standard not the lastest but does everything you need it to ,, squash courts would benefit from a lick of paint but that doesnt hold your game back at all ,, bar could do with a good refit ,, and sauna really need some attention thats in poor condition ,, changing rooms and showers (for males) are great and spacious ,, family changing rooms are good to ,, parking is good and again staff just so helpful :)

Negative experience: Ask to leave with no good reason other than an employee was uncomfortable with me being a member after being there for six months,very disappointed that it was carried out over the phone and not even given chance to deal with the issues which I still dont know what they were face to face.

Positive experience: The staff are friendly enough. The gym equipment is good, with Life Fitness Machines - by far the best gym equipment and lots of cardio equipment so no waiting. The swimming pool is nice to swim in when it’s quiet. It’s great that it has backstroke flags. It used to have wave-reducing lane ropes, which was great for a small, basic pool, but unfortunately they were taken away. The pool really needs a lifeguard and proper instructions for people to follow. Having two competing systems of lane signs telling people to chain swim but everybody in practice line swimming is dangerous - pick one or the other. As a competent swimmer I find people's behaviour very frustrating. I realise not everybody is familiar with swimming club rules but common sense should tell people that if your not a good swimmer it's really not fair to get in the way of someone who's working hard at their swimming. If you're a slow untrained swimmer, swim with the other slow swimmers, don't stop someone who's obviously swimming continuous sets. Every day this week I've had people get in the way, swimming directly in front of me forcing me to stop despite there being plenty of room in other lanes. In one case a random old man just plonked himself in the middle of the lane to swim 2 lengths, cutting me off 200 lengths into a 250 length swim. It makes it very stressful to swim as you're always wondering when some random large old person doing slow head-up sort-of-breaststroke is going to suddenly appear in the lane without warning. I have to say it's generally the older people who behave in this very entitled way, the younger people tend to be very considerate. The other week there were two lovely girls who encouraged other slow swimmers into their lane so that I could get on with me swim - much appreciated.

Positive experience: Good gym, friendly and helpful staff but your squash court booking system is shocking. You can book up to week in advance, that's ok. But unless you ring bang on 10 o clock to book for following week you risking not getting a chance of any booking in the afternoon. And on number on occasions now i rang exactly at 10am and all slots between 1600-1830 for the following week already booked???

Positive experience: Well I have only been there o 've. I live up the road in tetbury close . I can cycle there in 3 mins . So far so good . The staff are PROFFESIONAL treat u with respect . Also call u bye your name . The year I was at any time . I was still called mate . Every time j went up there . Disrespectful . Also rude . Equipment good . Plenty a showers . Sauna . Pool . Cafe .any time u had 2 showers for up to 70 people . You could be waiting 4 30 mins at peak. No a few up there from football .royal mail etc . So far all good will recommend .Chris's .

Negative experience: You get what you pay for. I pointed out to Management time and again about weight benches being ripped and in need of repair. Nothing happened, this went on for weeks. Then I reported there was mould on the foam where the benches were ripped. Again nothing got resolved! Got bitten a few times whilst training as well due to the lack of cleanliness. I reported the benches again and also took photos of the mouldy benches. Nothing got done so I cancelled my membership and reported the Riverside gym to the council and the local press, also supplying them with photos of the mouldy benches. This was back in 2014/15 so it may be the best gym in Gloucester now.

Fantastic experience: We take our kids here on saturday to play football they offer different age groups is a very friendly atmosphere and The kids have a great time, they have a very goos coach they stop for the summer holidays but start again in September.

Positive experience: Recent refurbishment has helped to revive a previously dated decor. Friendly helpful staff and good facilities. Good selection of exercise classes and modern sports hall.

Negative experience: Very poor! They have an anti bullying policy! I cancelled my gym membership, everytime i went in there was always someone laughing at someone or insulting them and when you went to the front desk to complain and they done nothing! If your planning to loose weight i wouldnt recommend you go here!

Negative experience: A gym on it's last legs! Went to this gym on a Month trial membership. The staff are friendly, particularly a guy called Ben and a woman called Dee, but the gym is disappointing in a few ways. The maintenance of the gym is very poor with many machines having little things wrong with them. The cleanliness in the gym leaves a lot to be desired. I used the preacher curl bench, and noticed that someone had sweated so much there were sweat lines running down the front of the bench. I returned the next day and the marks were still there, so it hadn't been cleaned. The cleaning is done very very badly, and the smell of old body odour lingers in the air!!! The gym allows kids from different groups to use the gym, who are poorly monitored. In the mornings there are a group of kids who seem to be from some kind of school exclusion unit. They definitely have behavioural difficulties, and their foul language can be, well foul. In the afternoons kids from a local private school use the facility, and whilst the foul language is absent, so is common sense, and they are a bit clumsy in the use of the equipment. The pool is regularly closed for mysterious reasons, which one can only assume is down to poor maintenance. The steam room is great, but on some of the nights, it gets switched off early, so you find that at 9.30 the steam stops. I have also had the lights in the cardio rooms upstairs turned off on me at 9.30 (health and safety hazard) but I was led to believe the club shuts at 10 not 9.30. The female Personal trainer is shocking, she simply has to be the worst personal trainer I have ever seen. She stands away from her clients with a cup of coffee in her hand, whilst they do their exercises with poor form. She is painful to watch, and I wouldn't train with her one to one, if she paid me. The club has a bald PT, who seems a bit more attentive, and switched on. I didn't see any other PT's so I assume it is only them. The club does not offer food in the bar, and it has definitely seen better days, but it is a comfy, friendly environment. Mark the barman is a friendly chap and is on point when it comes to serving people. The parking facilities are great, and you never have a problem parking. I would say the club is probably not worth the charge, when compared to some of the newer 24 hour gyms. The closing times are too early for a gym in 2017, and they are often in a rush to kick you out. This said, with firmer management, better staff motivation, better cleaning and better maintenance this could be a very good gym. At present it is a tired old ship just limping about in the ocean waiting to sink.
